I have a confession to make. If you see anything about me out in the Press, or any of my websites, or any of the videos and speaking engagements that are out there featuring me, I look pretty damn polished. That is because, well, I am. I strive to be out in the public eye. But the truth is, I am far from polished. Especially when it comes down to managing and growing my own companies, it’s quite possible that I single-handedly might be the world’s worst president, CEO, and greatest bottleneck creator. I probably should have gone with the professional title of “Chief Bottleneck Officer,” aka “CBO.” only in a bad sense of the title. For years, I have been holding up my company’s progress like a human traffic jam. It happens to the best of us, right? Unfortunately, the answer is a big fat “yes.”
Being the CBO “Chief Bottleneck Officer,” the Bottleneck Operator’s nemesis, isn’t something to be proud of. It caused delays, frustration, and missed opportunities in every aspect of my business. But the good news is that it’s easy to solve. And if you’re like me and need self-assurance, it’s okay to admit that you need help.
Once I realized that I was holding up the show and further enabling bad managerial and team behaviors, I took a step back and reassessed my role in the company. I realized that I needed to delegate more and trust my team to handle things independently and make some critical changes in my organization if we were going to continue to grow and prosper, and you know what? It worked!
I could focus on the things that mattered, like developing new strategies, creating a GLT (Growth Leadership Team), and growing the business to exit eventually. My team was able to step up and take on more responsibility, which made them feel empowered and valued, all while allowing me the freedom to do the things that I was naturally the best at, being the business entrepreneur.
So, to all of you out there who are struggling with being the chief bottleneck officer of your organizations: admittance is the first step. Once you decide it’s time to let go and start trusting your team, delegate more, prioritize your tasks, and focus on the big picture, you’ll be amazed at how much more you can accomplish when you’re not the bottleneck holding everything up.
